watari house.
The eclectic brief for this project included a raw aesthetic, gallery space to hang the clients' collection of paintings, a combined art/music studio space, and a site layout that facilitated interaction between the owners and their pet horse.
The restrictions of the site (long and narrow with a limited northern face, impacted by fire regulations, and setback from a major road) informed the placement and form of the buildings, with living areas located to maximise the limited north aspect, and the garage and studio separated from the main house to comply with fire codes.
The owners were keen on a rustic, shearing shed aesthetic, interpreted through simple form and raw materials such as blackbutt timber cladding, galvanised steel, Corten steel and concrete, which will all weather and develop a natural patina over time. Raising the level of the main building with a retaining wall on the western side will enable the clients' horse to be contained but come right up to the house to interact with the family. The entry hallway has been designed as a wide, open gallery area, with walls placed on an angle to accentuate the perspective of the view through the space.
"Keiron did a great job designing our house. He asked a lot of questions to get a sense of our priorities and crafted a solution to meet our needs with great flair. In addition to design expertise Keiron brought the knowledge of someone with building experience, putting forward solutions that were both beautiful and practical. He liaised positively with the builders at Wisharts to jointly resolve issues. The result speaks for itself."
